"Stand fast now in your spells and in your many sorceries. Let now the astrologers, those who prophesy ty the stars, those who predict by the new moons, stand up and save you from what will come upon you. Behold, they have become like stubble, fire burns them; they cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame." . . . . (Isaiah 47:12-14)

During Isaiah's time Babylon was the largest and most magnificient city in the ancient world. It's vast empire was protected by a powerful army. Therefore, the Babylonians had every reason to feel sure of themselves. They were confident. They were secure.

The Babylonians believed that every person was created to serve the gods, therefore, each Babylonian had his/her own personal god or goddess to whom prayers and sacrifices were offered. Babylonians believed that the gods shaped the destinies of mankind and through divination, they could determine the will of the gods. They looked for signs and omens everywhere, from the actions of animals to celestial events as simple as rain and thunder. Those who learned to practice divination could become very powerful in Babylon. Priests regularly recited incantations and performed rituals to ward off evil powers, understand the future and seek to change the course of events.

Not much has changed today. Many people today, like the Babylonians of old, are looking for comfort and direction through false religions, their own gods, and various occult practices.

However, Isaiah's warning to the Babylonians is still applicable for us today: there is only ONE God. Make sure you are not placing your hope, your trust in idols, false prophets or the gods of this world. The one TRUE God is the ONLY one who knows what the future holds. Get to know HIM and start placing your trust in HIM . . . TODAY. ~ Cici
